Audiology Diagnostics
Comprehensive Hearing Assessment and Diagnostic Services
Hearing plays an important role in communication, learning, relationships, and everyday life. When hearing difficulties are left unaddressed, they can affect a person’s ability to communicate effectively and participate fully in their daily activities. At Equilibrium Hearing & Balance Center, we provide comprehensive audiology diagnostic services to help assess hearing function and identify possible hearing-related concerns.
Our audiology services use a range of specialized diagnostic tests to evaluate different parts of the auditory system. Each assessment provides valuable information that can help guide appropriate hearing care and management.

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
The foundation of any hearing assessment. Wearing headphones in a sound-treated booth, you respond to tones at different pitches and volumes, allowing us to map the softest sounds you can hear across the frequency range. Results are plotted on an audiogram, which becomes the reference point for diagnosing hearing loss type and severity, and for guiding any hearing aid fitting.

Speech Audiometry
Hearing tones is only one part of understanding hearing ability. Speech Audiometry evaluates how well you can hear and understand spoken words. During the test, you may be asked to listen to and repeat words presented at different volume levels. The assessment can provide information about speech detection and speech understanding. Speech testing can be particularly useful when evaluating how hearing difficulties may affect everyday communication.

Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflexes
Tympanometry evaluates the function of the middle ear by measuring how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure. It can provide information about the condition and movement of the eardrum and middle-ear system. Acoustic reflex testing assesses the response of specific middle-ear muscles to loud sounds. Together, these assessments can provide useful information when investigating hearing difficulties that may be associated with middle-ear conditions.

Eustachian Tube Function (ETF)
The Eustachian tube plays an important role in maintaining appropriate pressure within the middle ear. When it does not function properly, a person may experience sensations such as ear fullness, pressure, popping, or changes in hearing. Eustachian Tube Function (ETF) testing helps assess how effectively the Eustachian tube performs its pressure-regulating function. The assessment may be recommended for individuals experiencing recurring ear pressure or other symptoms associated with middle-ear pressure regulation.

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) are sounds generated by the inner ear in response to stimulation. OAE testing measures these responses and provides information about the function of the cochlea. The test is objective and does not require the individual to respond actively to sounds, making it particularly useful in certain hearing screening and diagnostic situations. OAEs may be used as part of a broader hearing assessment, depending on the individual's age, symptoms, and hearing needs.

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)
Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a specialized diagnostic assessment that measures the electrical activity generated along the auditory pathway in response to sound. Electrodes are used to record responses as sound is presented to the ears. The results can provide valuable information about how auditory signals travel from the inner ear through the auditory nerve and towards the brainstem. BERA can be useful when conventional behavioral hearing tests are difficult to perform or when additional information about the auditory pathway is required.
